AC Joint separations are common in younger athletic patients, but can also occur in injuries. Orthopaedic surgeons have classified AC Separations into six types. The majority of AC separations are treated nonoperatively, especially types one and two (which account for 80% of these injuries). Type III separations represent a grey area; some are treated nonoperatively, some with surgery to reconstruct the AC joint. Types IV – VI usually require surgery, but these injury types are extremely rare. Dr. Walker will discuss treatment options with you during your office visit.
